The Annakirche on Annagasse 3b opened its doors in 1629, commissioned by the Discalced Carmelites who sought a devotional space in the expanding inner city. Daniel Gran's ceiling fresco, completed in 1751, depicts the apotheosis of Saint Anne across 120 square metres of plaster and pigment—a tableau that demands a visitor's full upward gaze. The church survived the 1683 Ottoman siege, the Napoleonic occupation, and two world wars, its gilded altarpiece by Franz Josef Wiedon remaining intact through each upheaval. Today St Anne's Church functions as both parish sanctuary and concert hall. The acoustics—shaped by vaulted ceilings, polished wood pews, and minimal soft furnishing—deliver clarity to string quartets and solo violinists. Ensembles perform works by Vivaldi, Mozart, Haydn, and Schubert several evenings each week, often in period costume. The repertoire leans toward Baroque and Classical-era compositions that align with the building's 18th-century interior. Seasonal programs include Advent and Christmas concerts featuring choral arrangements and candlelit settings. The church occupies a narrow plot between Kärntner Strasse and the State Opera, a five-minute walk from Stephansplatz. Its modest façade—stucco over brick, painted ochre—belies the interior's ornamental density. Side altars dedicated to Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross flank the nave, each framed by marble columns and trompe-l'œil pilasters. The main altar's sculptural group, carved in 1747, portrays Saint Anne instructing the Virgin Mary, their robes rendered in polished lime wood. Concert-goers occupy the same pews used by daily Mass attendees, a continuity that grounds the musical program in liturgical tradition. Performances typically run 60 to 75 minutes without intermission, allowing the music to unfold in a single unbroken arc beneath Gran's fresco of clouds and saints.
